Encompass presents Angel of the Amazon, a compelling music drama by Evan Mack, based on the true story of Sister Dorothy Stang, who devoted her life to protecting the Amazon rainforest and the indigenous peoples who make it their home. In 2005 at age 73, Sister Dorothy was killed by assassins hired by the owner of a logging company, who felt her passion for the Earth and all of its gifts to be a threat. Her sacrifice launched a global movement to save the rainforest and to plant trees around the world. Dot, as she was fondly known, met and faced all these challenges in serving the people of Brazil whom she loved so deeply and for whom she sacrificed her life.

Sister Dorothy’s Mission
Angel of the Amazon explores important contemporary themes through the unfolding, personal story of Sister Dorothy Stang (1931-2005). After entering the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1948, she began her ministry in Brazil in 1966. Her mission illuminates the struggles and obstacles that are prevalent around the world today---helping the poor, protecting the environment, preserving indigenous cultures, and balancing the need for jobs with the sustainability needs of the environment.
The Encompass Mission
The Rainforests are the heart and breath of our planet, evocative of the Tree of Life, symbolizing the eternal connection of air, light, water, and earth in harmony with the people of the world. Our mission is to bring global connection and awareness of the gifts of our planet by bridging indigenous cultures, women’s wisdom, and social justice/environmental issues through the lens of American and world music, true stories, and independent film.
Encompass deserves credit for its commitment to musically and thematically adventurous new work.
